Robert Hill, Jr. looked over the street plan for his new subdivision and shook his head. The best path for the main road would require removing one too many trees: an ancient oak that had held its ground since before the American Revolution. Hill couldn’t imagine taking it down. Today that magnificent oak is one of the most prominent features of North Raleigh’s Ethan’s Glen.
Hill’s deep regard for the environment had guided the naming of his company. Contentnea Creek Development Company, founded in 1998, was the namesake of a wild and pristine stream that meandered through Hill’s native Eastern North Carolina. This was a new endeavor, but its strength lay in Hill’s experience over the 50 years he had piloted the quality-driven Hillco Ltd., a company he founded and headquartered in Kinston. |
